Conditioned to Believe

The media now a days influences and conditions our society. A lot of the commercials you see on television, the ads you see online, to the billboards you see on the side of the freeway can be misleading. Many times when things are misleading, people tend to believe them and therefore are conditioned to believe a certain thing. In the book Brave New World, people are conditioned to believe only what they are told. Due to hypnopedia, the society only knows as much as they are told. For example they are conditioned to believe that nature is no good. To them, it's wrong to like nature. The society also doesn't believe in books. Nobody reads books in the "New World". Such conditioning could potentially lead to "the perfect society", but in our world, the perfect society is out of our reach.

When watching television, I often stumble upon commercials of cellphone companies trying to convince the public that their company is the better one. Many people, being as gullible as they are, fall for what these companies say and therefore are conditioned to believe that the cellphone company being promoted is the best one out there.

  1. I see where you are getting at but don't you think that we are also conditioned to not just fall for the traps the media give us but to watch TV in order to learn what company is the best. I mean if commercials are all that is influencing us then why don't we just stop watching TV, right? We must also be conditioned to want to know what is the best company out there or to look for the best company in order to stay "cool" or "accepted" in society.

  2. I agree with you. But I don't think that commercials are the only thing that conditions us. Also, commercials aren't the only thing that informs us over which phone company better. Have you ever been conditioned by the media?

  3. I agree with what you're saying; how commercials have an big influence as far as misleading potential viewers. I feel like it should be against the law to misinform costumers with useless information since it does play a big role in conditioning our minds to believe things that we constantly see or hear. Even though I know that television has influences me, I think its ashame how we let something as mindless as technology take control over our society.
